Eos develops novel, low-cost energy storage solutions for transportation and other industries. Eos’ proprietary energy storage can be used in electric vehicles (EV) to:

  • Enable EVs to be cost competitive with internal combustion engine (ICE) powered cars — with the same performance and range, but with 1/10th the fuel cost ($0.02/mile)
  • Lengthen driving range to >340 miles
  • Provide a safe, stable, long-life propulsion system

  • Eos Aurora 17 | 100
Based on Eos’ breakthrough long-life rechargeable zinc-air battery, the Eos Aurora 17 | 100 can be used in EV platforms for range, combined with Eos’ advanced lead acid battery for power.

    • Proprietary technology: first ever long-life rechargeable zinc-air battery
    • 17kW, 100 kWh rechargeable zinc-air battery, sized for electric vehicle market
    • Low cost:
    • - Approximately $12,000 vs $70,000 for equivalent li-ion battery
      - Low-cost manufacturing designed into product
    • Response time: Immediate
    • Non-toxic, non-flammable electrolyte and materials
    • Based on robust, well developed technology: disposable zinc-air batteries, widely used today (e.g. in hearing aids)
    • High energy density: In the same way that gasoline uses oxygen to burn, the Horizon uses oxygen from ambient air as a cathode reactant, allowing the battery to “breathe” and saving space and cost
    • Safe, low cost, locally sourced, readily available materials
    • - Zinc: One of the world’s most plentiful and inexpensive metals, stable, non-toxic, energy dense, locally available
(US, Canada and Australia are three of top five global zinc producers)
      - Air
      - Electrolyte ingredient also used in popular toothpaste brands
    • Status: Currently scaling up battery prototypes (17kW units) for initial manufacturing in 2012 and delivery of MW scale systems for grid-storage to customers in 2013. This product will be the point of departure for the automotive implementation.

Eos Corona Advanced Lead Acid Battery
Lead acid is a low cost power storage technology. Traditionally at full depth of discharge, however, its cycle life is too short to be economically viable for many applications. The Eos Corona lead acid system resolves this cycle life and depth of discharge limitation, while maintaining the low cost per kW of traditional lead acid batteries. Eos’ lead acid system benefits include:
    • Long-life: 10x longer useful life than existing lead-acid batteries; extension from 500 to 5,000 cycles at full depth of discharge
    • Proprietary Eos technology: Designed to prevent the deterioration of the anode, extending life
    • Electric vehicle applications: In combination with Eos zinc-air battery for range, lighter weight for comparable power and energy makes Eos Aurora suitable for powering electric vehicles
    • Increased energy delivery: for 33 Amp-hour car battery, would increase energy delivery from 0.4 kWh to 0.8 kWh
    • Increased energy storage and access, and higher gravimetric energy density
    • Low cost: Same low cost per kW and a lower cost per kWh compared to lead acid SLI batteries
    • Status: Initial testing complete; must complete design and build full size prototype

    Eos Vista Zinc-Air Flow Battery
Eos is also developing a zinc-air flow battery, designed to provide flexible vehicle range and enable immediate refueling in addition to standard recharging.
    • Proprietary zinc-air flow battery based on Eos’ zinc-air technology
    • Flexible vehicle range: Allows decoupling of the power and energy of the battery for more flexible configuration and lower cost per kWh
    • Immediate refueling: As battery discharges, the used electrolyte is stored and replaced, and more zinc is added, allowing for battery operation to continue
    • Status: Early, further design development required

    Eos Electric Vehicle Battery: Eos Aurora 17 | 100 zinc-air battery (17kW, 100kWh) for range +
Eos Corona lead-acid battery for power/acceleration
    • 175 peak HP
    • >340 mile driving range, competitive with ICE vehicle
    • Same cost as ICE vehicle without government subsidies
    • $0.02/mile fuel cost vs. $0.20/mile for gasoline
    • By using the Eos Vista zinc-air flow battery, the EV becomes refuelable (3 mins) in addition to rechargeable

    Growing Market
LCM Research estimates that the market for electric vehicle batteries will grow to $16B by 2016 and $33B by 2025… without any consideration for the elasticity of the market should costs come down to the level Eos can achieve.i

    Opportunities for Partnership
Eos is pursuing strategic partnerships with companies in the automotive industry to jointly develop solutions for electric vehicle applications using Eos’ proprietary battery technologies.

    Strong IP Protection
Multiple patents issued and pending with over 100 claims covering:
    • Cell configuration and architecture
    • Cathode design, materials and catalysts
    • Electrolyte and additives
    • System configuration and electrolyte system

    Eos’ Mission
Eos’ mission is to produce the most cost effective energy storage solutions that are not only less expensive than other battery technologies, but less expensive than the most economical alternative used today to provide the same services – an internal combustion engine for vehicle power.
